British born singer-songwriter Najma Akhtar created a place in world music history in the late 1980s by Introducing subtle Jazz arrangements to the traditional genre of the Ghazal (the urdu ballad). Her first solo release in the UK, Qareeb, achieved cult status and was universally acclaimed as a groundbreaking recording in world music.
With the phenomenal success of Qareeb, Akhtar toured and performed extensively and was the first British-Asian to play Ronnie Scott’s. She has played at several music festivals including WOMAD and Glastonbury and in almost every significant London venue – The Jazz Cafe, Royal Albert Hall, South Bank, Hammersmith Apollo, Wembley, Earls Court, Dominion Theatre and Hackney Empire. With eight solo albums to her name, worldwide sales and a huge global fan following, Najma is now working on her ninth solo album, which will be released in 2011.
